Focus areas

Where the network's work is concentrated today.

The Partnership does not run every citizen science project in the world — it coordinates a small number of initiatives where a network-of-networks approach adds real value.

Data & standards

SDG data & monitoring

IIASA research suggests that around a third of UN Sustainable Development Goal indicators could be supported by citizen-collected data. This work area builds the data standard, metadata schema, and open data directory needed to make that data findable, comparable, and usable by official statistics bodies.

Working group

Citizen science & climate change mitigation

A working group developing, testing, and scaling citizen science approaches that support emission reductions and strengthen global climate action. Partners include the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, and the UN Science-Policy-Business Forum.

Consortium

Global Mosquito Alert Consortium (GMAC)

The first global platform dedicated to advancing citizen science for mosquito monitoring. Consortium partners are concentrated in the United States and Europe, with pilot deployments underway in Central America, South America, and Africa, co-hosted by the Wilson Center's Science and Technology Innovation Program, UNEP, and ECSA.

Data platform

World Environment Situation Room (WESR)

WESR is UNEP's data, information, and knowledge platform for the world environment situation. While the wider platform is being rebuilt with a stronger focus on data-driven solutions, the Partnership hosts its citizen science component.

Community of practice

Citizen science & open science

Contributing the citizen science community's perspective to UNESCO's Recommendation on Open Science, including a synthesis paper drawing on views from dozens of practitioners across more than twenty countries.

Policy & advocacy

SDG / CS Max group

A working group aligning citizen science outcomes to the Sustainable Development Goals, open to organizations that want to contribute to or benefit from engagement with the UN 2030 Agenda.
